There were many Natives that lived on the lands but the most common were the Seminoles.  The Seminoles occupied the northern part of Florida that were coveted by American settlers in the neighboring state of Georgia.  The United States and the Seminoles had three wars.  They took place in 1817 till 1818 that was the first war.  After the passage of the Indian Removal act in 1830, the U.S. government attempted to relocate the Seminoles to Oklahoma, causing yet another war which took place in 1835 till 1842.  The third war was in 1855 till 1858.

Florida became the twenty-seventh state in the United States on March 3,1845.  Floridas first governor was William D. Moseley.  David Levy Yulee was floridas first U.S. Senator.

Florida originally belonged to Spain, but in the year 1763 there was an exchange with Britian for Havana, Cuba, which was captured during the seven year war.  With the exchange came the evacuation of Spanish residents.  Leaving the land bare.  The extra space was soon to be filled by Americans drawn by the promises of large land grants, and run away slaves trying to get away from old masters in the U.S.  Slowly Florida grew to have a large America population and with the help of military expeditions.  The owners were influenced to hand over the land to the U.S. with the Adams-Onis Treaty named after the Spanish foriegn minister and the secretary of state John Quincy Adams.
